Applications - Sustainable Solutions

The sustainability of communities, industrial, agricultural and mining ventures is often limited by availability of water of sufficient good quality. Thus in arid regions where the only available supplies are brackish groundwaters, or in regions where existing groundwater supplies have been affected by salinisation or are of poor quality, In Situ Desalination (ISD) can provide a solution to sustainability and viability of supplies. Furthermore, the unique down-hole system provides an environmentally acceptable system with no added costs for saline water disposal, as in other systems.

For example, our ISD_8A unit can produce 4KL/h of high quality water (35ML per year) from brackish groundwater. Desaln8 can offer water management options for our customers which are very cost effective and lower than similar volume conventional ’above ground‘ desalination plants.

Key Applications

The ISD technology as a 'standalone unit' is ideally suited to the potable and irrigation water supply needs for multiple small farm and small community scale applications in regions where only low quality groundwater is available. However even in regions where desalination (usually of seawater) is extensively used, such as the Saudi Arabia and surrounding regions, the ISD technology is expected to be very competitively priced.

ISD applications are many. These not only would provide supplies for more remote communities in arid regions, but can also be applied at coastal margins in areas affected by saline intrusion caused by over-pumping of fresh groundwater and/or reduced recharge.

Small island communities including those in Australia where tourism has become a significant input to the local economy, requires high quality, safe water supplies to maintain such developments. Additionally, there are clear opportunities for agricultural, mining and industrial developments which could become established in regions where only low quality groundwater is available.

ISD, used in areas impacted by dryland salinity in conjunction with groundwater pumping and disposal of saline water, would not only assist with lowering the groundwater table and reducing the discharge of salts and groundwater at the surface, but provide drinking water or water for high value agricultural or industrial supplies where none currently exist.

ISD could be applied to alleviate the current problem of providing water to many of our small remote towns that require upgrades to their groundwater treatment systems so as to be in line with the latest Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, without adding the complication of concentrate disposal.

This same analysis applies to international markets such as those in India, China and the Gulf states given the advantages in terms of cost, environmental footprint and impact, and system security offered by ISD's distributed water supply compared with more conventional water supply systems.

The applications for ISD are large and growing in proportion to the:

  2. demand for quality water
  3. increasing cost of competing 'scheme' water
  4. degradation of existing groundwater supplies
  5. recognition of the value of water
  6. increased value of land with reliable water supplies
